How do dogs in therapy work?
At ArtWell Therapy Center, we understand that animals can bring warmth, comfort and a welcoming presence to the therapeutic environment. Our friendly canine wellness companions may occasionally be present at the office and, when appropriate and with client consent, may provide companionship and comfort during sessions.
Our dogs are not certified or registered animals and are not service animals. Their presence is intended to contribute to a warm, supportive environment and is not a substitute for clinical treatment or a formal animal-assisted therapy program. We understand that not everyone is comfortable around dogs or may have allergies or other concerns. Clients are always welcome to request a dog-free office space for their appointments.
Spending time with an emotional support animal (ESA) allows someone dealing with a health issue to have judgment-free interactions and experience unconditional support. Petting or playing with a dog releases oxytocin, sometimes called the “love hormone,” in both your brain and the dog’s brain. The release of oxytocin is associated with:
- Lower levels of cortisol, or the “stress hormone”
- A sense of social connection
- Lower blood pressure
- Increased feelings of relaxation
These feelings can help clients feel more grounded and reduce anxiety and depression. At ArtWell, we have 5 canine companions who come into the office at different times. Please put your paws together while I introduce:

Handler: Rebecca Irmen

Handler: Theresa Ro

Handler: Allison Moraga

Handler: Erica Reyes

Handler: Danika Varady
If you are interested in adding a canine companion and would like to be paired with one of our clinician’s dogs please let us know and we will make every effort to bring them in when your session is scheduled.
